Wild Price Range on Mares, Divetek Fins

The mystery is revealing itself. I've learned that Divetek is a South African brand, and they're selling on behalf of Mares. Is there any reason not to buy Divetek gear? (I suppose only South Africans can really say...)

Wild Price Range on Mares, Divetek Fins

A local online wholesaler has recently opened here in South Africa here. I still have an eight year old pair of almost featureless Technisub Idea3's, so I looked at replacing them. (I presume I can get much more efficient fins, though I'll be sure to try them first.) I have some idea of the...

3 Divers lost on the Spiegel Grove

To add my two cents worth here, a lot of this story seems to stem from the ago-old question of personal judgement. Diving is risky, but we do it anyway, because we evaluate the risks involved and are willing to take those risks. The decision to go down, or into a cave, into a wreck, slightly...

Changing mix between dives on a Suunto Vyper

Ahoy, I can't find explicit information in the manual, so I figure asking here will yield the fastest answer. In short, can I change the O2 content of my gas between dives when in Nitrox mode? I know that can't change modes within 48 hours of a dive, and that you can't change mix underwater...

    Scapa Flow without Tech-ing

For me there are two things that define tech diving: decompression or trimix. My concern was that many of the best sights are beyond the scope of no-deco diving with air (or nitrox) i.e. what I call recreational diving. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. I just have to get into the...

Do you need PADI AOW for the "Simply the Best" tour(Brothers, Elphinstone, Daedalus)?

Wow. I concede that 5 knots is strong. I'll be diving off a liveaboard, so I expect all dives to be led.

Do you need PADI AOW for the "Simply the Best" tour(Brothers, Elphinstone, Daedalus)?

On the same subject, just how strong are the currents, anyway? I've done drifts in Mozambique and Sodwana Bay, and am also looking at doing the 'Simply the Best' tour around mid-June. I'm always a bit wary of people saying conditions are rough. I prefer absolute measures.

which wetsuit for red sea diving

I'll throw my hat in the ring for the heck of it. I haven't dived the Red Sea, but I've been in water from 8°C (Cape Town) to 30°C (Maldives). More useful to this discussion are Mozambique and Sodwana Bay, where the water temperature is around 25°C. My suit is a 5mm Farmer John (FJ) and 7mm...

    Scapa Flow without Tech-ing

Ahoy, I've read the other thread regarding Scapa Flow, and it seems to be more about getting there and the costs thereof. I'm wondering about how accessible the diving is without being a techie. I'm more keen on wrecks than reefs and wildlife, and so I'm really keen on making my way to Scapa...

    Red Sea Liveaboard

Ahoy, I'm also trying to look into a Red Sea liveaboard. I've read about the brothers, but do the appropriate liveaboards leave from accessible cities? (For that matter, which are the most accessible cities?) I'm also a wreck person by nature (Cape Town, go figure), so the Northern safari...

Starting the Search for a Computer

Ahoy, I'm new to the boards, though not that new to diving. I've been diving Cape Town for a while, though I only really got into it about three years ago, I've logged about 40 dives, although I've done about 15 more that I never got around to logging. I'm not going for any milestones, so I'm...
