Costa Rica Trip Report, Jan 2005

Trip Report: Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Jan 7 - 14th, 2005 Stayed at: Villa Flores B+B, recommended, has excellent pool and gardens. Also 2 nights at Coco Verde motel, not recommended for longer stays, on the main road and noisy (but this is where the dive operation is)...

    Removable H-valve

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a removable H-valve (or Y-valve)? What I am looking for is an H-valve that I can attach to my steel 100 DIN tank valve, which splits into two DIN valves to attach first stages. Why you ask? Save money I guess, otherwise I would have to put H-valve on...

    Pool session gone awry...

My 2c worth: this scenario (the panicked bolt to the surface) is something you see regularly in the pool as an instructor. It generally follows aspiration of water after either trying to breathe from an upside down or un-purged regulator, or inhaling water through the nose while mask...

Who's diving where this Canada Day Weekend?

Hey, if anyone on this board is diving the Eastcliffe Hall over the long weekend, I have a softweight belt (black scubapro pocket belt with lead shot) lying in the mud at the bow - if you would like to retrieve it for me that would be super (its hard to get to because of the current - there's...

    Funny dive stories

Hah yes! Been there, done that. Usually one of the students is also briefed to either drop his weight belt or inflate his BC so he/she floats away. The IDC really was good fun!

    Safety stop

Thanks. Maybe you can explain to me why the soda bubbles when you release the pressure suddenly rather than slowly. I dont remember much of my high school physics! Tom

    Safety stop

Doc, could you clarify what you meant in the last sentence of this paragraph. My understanding is that the soda will bubble because of the sudden drop in pressure when you open the bottle. Is this not the case? Thanks.

    Decompression model on Suunto Vyper

Where can I get more information about these NAUI RGBM protocols?

    Decompression model on Suunto Vyper

I am still missing something. If the floor and the ceiling and the same in a light deco scenario, how could they be any different is a heavy deco scenario? My understanding is that you have to ascend to the floor to start effective deco, but should not exceed the ceiling. I would imagine...

    Decompression model on Suunto Vyper

Thanks for the response Bruce! Assuming this is accurate (and I am sure it is, since I understand that you consulted for Suunto on their deco models), then I still dont understand why the floor was so shallow. The instructions that come with the Vyper say that when you are in deco mode you...

    Decompression model on Suunto Vyper

I am assuming that what my downloaded profile shows IS what the computer told me at the time. Since it was a couple of years ago I do not remember myself. I have not tried a similar profile in planning mode (but I will). Are you suggesting that there may be a difference in the recorded profile...

    Decompression model on Suunto Vyper

Not sure if this the exactly the right forum for this, but anyway... I was looking at a couple of old profiles from my Vyper the other day, in partcular a deeper dive in which the Vyper went into decompression mode. The Vyper has a concept of decompression floor and ceiling depths, and...

    PADI's new Discover Nitrox cert

True, but it is not clear from the PADI material whether you have to be a nitrox instructor to give this discover nitrox course (although I assume so). The open water portions can be conducted by divemaster and above. My guess is that this course has been created in response to demand by...
