Solo New Diver, Suggestions needed for Philippines December

Erm . . every (decent) dive centre on Malapascua has their own mooring that they put in and maintain. We all dive along a 200m section of wall / slope full of cleaning stations for sharks. There seems to be a concept that some dive centre has a secret spot. Sadly not true. We try and spread...

    Atlantis or Mike's or?

Mike's trumps Pura Vida for sure. Better rooms and food. Pura Vida is a 30 second walk away so you can still eat there or have a drink if you like. Cebu would be your main hub to arrive in. You can also spend 5 days in Malapascua or Moalboal for example. Lesser spots would be Siquijor or...

Please advise on Philippine locations that meet these criteria:

Hi Scubabackpacker Got your message. September to November is a great time to visit the Visayas and Malapascua . . . unless it isn't. ;-). Mostly we have good weather and fewer divers at this time so certainly not mass tourism. But October and November can be months when pesky typhoons that...

Rainy July, ok to dive Malapascua?

3mm ideal. Water temp great but there can be micro stingers in the water that are annoying. Hasn'/t rained here for more than 10 minutes over the last week. That might change but the microclimates the big islands attract don't happen here. Some LPAs out there but as of writing, it is almost...

Choosing some diving spots in Malapascua

The Pioneer wreck is in 110m. The likely named Mogami Maru, which is erroneously labelled the Pioneer, is in 55m so a tech decompression dive only. Kimud may or may not be on offer, depending on whether Hammerheads have recently been seen. I would look to do a dive site called Bogtong Bato...

How NOT to dive Monad Shoal in Malapascua. Is a Thresher sighting worth the damage?

The dive can be busy due to the fact that there is a window of best activity but there is nothing wrong with the dive and the marine encounters remain second to none - multiple threshers, Devil rays and the odd pelagic Manta ray. The problem is diver behaviour. Divers think (and are sometimes...

Help with 3 1/2 month Phillipines diving itinerary

If you get to Dumaguete on time that is probably a pretty good option for Immigration. The office has got busier but it is still quicker then say Cebu and they are used to 'foreigners'.

Going in November/december - Typhoon season or good weather?

To put it in perspective, here on Malapascua we cancel perhaps 5 days a year in total for weather or 1.36%. So yes you can get unlucky but whether you re plan your whole trip on a small percentage of being unlucky is another question. I have worked in a shop in Australia that cancelled 50% of...

    Malapascua vs Southern Leyte

I think based on your last comment Malapascua is the right option for you. You can eat in seven different places on 7 nights, all within 10 minutes of your resort. All very laid back and tropical beach atmosphere.

    Where to dive Philippines

While the Thresher Shark is the main attraction around Malapascua its not quite accurate to say not much else considering we have regular sightings of Blue Ring Octopus, Harlequin Shrimp, Hairy Frogfish, Bobtail Squid, White Tips and lots more. Throw in some sunken ferries and a WWII wreck and...

Questions about Cebu and area around

A week is far too long in Moalboal as the diving is nice but very repetitive. Have a look at Dauin near Dumaguete. Great muck diving with schooling fish and turtles at Apo island. Book early if coming in near Easter - all the better places will be fully booked early.

Where to go? (The Philippines - December/January)

Make sure to book ahead! The Philippines sees a surge of visitors (still a LOT less then Thailand, Indonesia etc) from about December 20th and it runs through January. With 18 days i would stick to the Cebu area and maybe do 5 days in Malapascua, 4 in Moalboal and maybe 6 in Dumaguete /...

    Philippines safety in Dumaguete?

If a bit unsure stay in a resort off the beach. Seems AS MO is to arrive by boat at night and grab people. BUt they will be way out of their 'support zone' by Dumaguete.
