When we did ours down here in AZ we had an instuctor drive down from Wa and we paid 500 for the class and each paid 100 for his expenses. That seems to be the going rate. With your profile saying you are in SoCal there are lots of instuctors in the SoCal area why not just contact them and see...
Best alternative are the turtles. I like my Jets because they work for the types of kicks I use. I have tried many different types of fins and the Jets work best. Maybe the dive shop dude wanted to sell you some $200.00 fins instead of $80.00 Jets??
There is a large group of us that dive regularly @ Lake Pleasant. My 10yo is certified and there are lots of kids active in the sport out here don't give up on this great sport just cause you move to the largest beach with no water!;)

Order the Drysiut Material and DVD and learn on your own there is nothing to dry diving that is not discussed in the book. then just find a pool to practice skills in. Then just keep you dives shallow until you feel confident. Just my 2p.s.i
