Spare air or sumthing like it

An adult who surfaces while holding a breath of compressed air from as shallow as four feet can embolize a lung. Not sure if it would be even shallower for a kid. Providing anyone untrained with compressed gas underwater breathing apparatus is negligent at a minimum. Providing an untrained...

    Recommendations for Nautilus/lifeline?

I have the original model, with voice communication. I carry it on every dive. I’ve not had problems with it. Fortunately, I’ve not used it for a real emergency. No use of the “red button.” But I have used it for talking to the dive boat. For instance, my buddy and I surfaced well down...

Taking Rescue Course and I don't think the conditions are good to dive in.

I agree that this instructor should be reported. The NUMBER ONE RULE of ALL rescue situations is to NOT BECOME ANOTHER VICTIM. As we teach it is the BSA, "Don't just do something! Stand there!" In other words, when encountering an emergency situation, don't simply react. Stop and assess...

    DIR- GUE Attaching a whistle?

I have a small surface emergency kit (Storm whistle, signal mirror, strap and a Flourescein tube) in a mesh bag, clipped into a pocket.

    Fixing sticky inflator button

Try Corrosion Block. I know it's a bit pricey, but this stuff really works and it only take a little bit. Plus, it will help protect from future corrosion and will work with a lot of scuba gear. I always stock a bottle in my dive tools. https://learchem.com/products/corrosion-block.html

Dive boat etiquette and buoyancy check

If I read your post correctly, you'll be using your own gear on that boat dive. If so, you can get really, really close to your ideal weight before you even hit the water. Weigh all of your fresh water gear, lead, tank and you. You'll need to add lead equaling 2.5% of that to have the same...

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

Yep. I was diving with a random "insta-buddy" on a boat dive in Carmel, California. We were down around 80' and I was running low on NDL time. I signaled him that we'd better go up. I waved me off. I gave him the "thumb" for the dive and he again waived me off. (I strongly believe that the...

Long hose single tank rec setup?

You'll save your regulator and your ego by simply tying a boltsnap onto the long hose, near the regulator. Then, whenever your primary reg isn't in your (or your donee's) mouth, clip it off to your right chest D-ring. No falling. No dropping. No draging. (and no laughter and embarrassment...

Long hose single tank rec setup?

I'm purely recreational and I dive with a 7' hose. I also set my son up with a 7' hose. It's not hard to route, stays out of the way, and allows for air sharing while going single file through the kelp.

Kona dive op for Young diver?

I echo what grantwiscour just said. Lots of good ops, but I've found Kona Honu to be best at addressing individual diver needs. They're super friendly, so give them a call and have a discussion. Also, consider some shore dives, with a guide.

Ever wonder why your carry on gets searched

Once, I, too, forgot to remove my dive knife (and Trilobite line cutter) from my dive harness in my carry-on. Sure enough, TSA pulled my bag to open up. When I saw my knife et al, I felt a chill come up my spine. Nonetheless, I drew the TSA inspector's attention to my steel backplate and...

    Gear pockets with BP/W

For wetsuit diving, I use Pirahna Dive Mfg.'s tech shorts and my son uses Highland tech shorts. I really, really like his and recommend that you take a look at them. The pockets are well made and designed and the shorts stay in place, even with wetsuit compression.

    Recommendations for Nautilus/lifeline?

Because the law changed and all VHS Marine radios, including handheld, now need to be able to receive DSC automated emergency messages, as well as send them. Nautilus couldn't make that happen and still be small enough to stow in a pocket.

    Recommendations for Nautilus/lifeline?

Talking to the boat can greatly reduce the chances of your minor predicament becoming an emergency. It's sure worked out that way for me.

    Recommendations for Nautilus/lifeline?

I have the original Nautilus Lifeline, which is larger and has voice capability. I tied on a bolt snap and it lives in my left thigh pocket (either tech shorts over my wetsuit or drysuit pocket).

    Diving in Hawaii

Be sure not to miss the Black Water dives on Kona! My friend Jeff Milisen leads many of them (with Kona Honu Divers) and his wife Sarah leads others (with Jack's Diving Locker). He literally wrote the book on Hawaii black water diving...

Should we put fork in DSS?

DSS backplates have standard 11" spacing for wing attachment. It should work with most, if not all, wings, as the 11" spacing is the industry standard. Just ask if the particular wing you're interested in has 11" spacing.
