I had a problem with Customs in 2003 because I had a 50 cent ancient coil boiler (hot plate) to boil shells. Apparently "electronic equipment" was a big no-no. In the Customs room were two other guys-- one had a satellite dish and another a stack of Penthouses. Wow, that's what I'd try to bring...
I agree it should be no problem according to PADI. But, check with the shop policy on these things. I took the "Nitrox Adventure Dive" with one shop and a different shop said I had to do the whole course and both dives with them to get Nitrox Cert. (this was long ago when the 2 dives were required).
On charters I always set it up myself. Once in a while the DM would switch tanks and I let them do that but checked that my "Bio Tank Lock" was set properly. And checked air of course. In Panama it was just me and the DM on the boat for 4 days of charters. Once he switched out his own tank for...
I haven't read all the replies, but it was easy to predict what some of them would be. To relate it to my profession, a good clarinet teacher doesn't need to have any sort of instructor certification/degree. As well, a certified music teacher can be a very poor one. But the percentages say the...
Is it true that you can only dive there at night in summer? I've read in one place no diving during beach hours, and in another place it says talk to the lifeguard and they may waive the $5 beach fee.
Yes, everything Jim said. I figure it's always best to take the course where you plan to be "working". I DMd four seasons and got paid $300 for assisting OW course (per course, not total....). But I've been told that was a very rare situation. Don't buy into the "I want to give back" or "I enjoy...
Welcome from a Yonkers native. I'm envious of your trips! Other than McClearie Park, Allenhurst Jetty & Manasquan River RR Bridge, do you know of any good NJ shore sites?
I'm the poster boy for the cheap Scottsman (despite my last name I'm mostly Scottish). I will use tanks with 6 month old air and have my reg serviced every 3 years. But, my dives are to 30 feet usually, so any problem and I can CESA my way up. No 80 foot solo diving dark holes for this Scott.
Welcome to the Board. Funny, I've dived charters out of Pensacola & Panama City (& Destin) and did several courses years ago at Vortex, all when we were "snowbirding". Did a dive in L. Pontchartrain too once somewhere between NO & Slidell-- 8 feet, don't recommend it. Too bad that whole coast...
In my "heyday" (age 57-62, divemastering courses included) I did 80 at most one year. Later I averaged 50-70. Now at age 70 in April I will be happy with 30+-- mostly because diving wet all winter here has become less and less appealing...
