I have said this before...
What diving I've done, I see 98 percent of the divers out there without a bailout bottle of any kind. I would rather have 15 - 20 breaths (pony) than 2 or 3 breaths (SA), but I would take 2 or 3 over none at all.
Gotta keep this going! Surely we can get to 400 posts!
I know.....
Spare Air is better than a pony bottle in every way. Especially the Nitrox model.
That ought to be good for 200 posts easy.
I guess it is the nature of a forum to have a strong opinion one way or the other, but it really seems to me that in an emergency, a spare air is better than nothing, a pony is better than a spare air, and nothing beats well maintained equipment, good training (with recurrent practice) and a...
Do I detect some cynicism? I DO appreciate some positive posts on SA. It seems you are putting yourself way out on a limb here to support anything positive about the product.
I do have to agree that a Nitrox version would seem to be an attempt to fleece the ignorant. I can't imagine anyone...
I don't know anything about them, so I'm no help there, but they are featured in the ad on the left side of this site. I would imaging that everyone has seen them!
You guys are being pretty rough on a guy here. I don't know Bob Evens from Adam, but he is good enough to put himself out here with his product. If you don't like the product, the price, or the manufacturer, don't buy his product. I must confess that reading this thread has made me curious. They...
One of the reasons I bought my own gear. One of my first trips was down to Cozomel off a cruise ship. Really got tired of dragging all that gear off the ship and to the dive operation, but on the boat, I went down to the head and there were all the rental regulators laying on the floor in that...
My feelings exactly. SA does not belong in your dive plan, but if you have an equipment malfunction, it will get you to your buddy or even to the surface better than nothing. Obviously in an OOA situation, the more air the better, as long as you have the pony on every dive. SA is simple to strap...
Thank you for finally explaining your attitude about SA. I carry a spare air and I am one of your Vacation Divers. But there is no way I come close to relying on the SpareAir. The thought that "I have extra air with me, so I can cut it close" never enters my mind. My wife and I practice OOA with...
I couldn't agree more. I just don't understand why some seem to be so anti-SpareAir. Certainly a pony is a better solution IF you have it with you, but I will take even one breath over none.
More power to them. If they can manufacture a product, I welcome them to sell it for whatever price the market will bear. That is the beauty of a market economy, you can get whatever you want if you have the cash.
I have a handmade backpacking chair that I paid $100 for bucause is weighes a...
Anybody know the ramifications of converting an oxygen tank to a SCUBA tank? I have several samll O2 bottles that I don't need anymore that could be pony bottles.
Gonna have to get that book. Was in Bonaire a couple of weeks ago and Captain Don dropped by his resturant. He is quite a charactor! He had much more to say to the ladies at our table than us guys, but it was an interesting evening.
I've noticed the argument that some have put forth that annual service of regulators is not necessary. If you have your regulator serviced every year (as I do) what do you think of using the parts from that service as a spare part kit? You will for sure have the correct parts as they came our of...
Am I missing something? If you are "carrying" 15 lbs of extra weight, I would assume you would drop lead to make up for it. Are you really carrying extra weight?
We just took our first trip with Nitrox a couple of weeks ago. We did more diving (Bonaire) and had more energy in the evenings than trips on air. I definitly joined the ranks of the folks who say you have more post-dive energy on Nitrox.
On Bonaire it was free, but I'd pay the extra for...
