    2 flies on the ceiling...PANIC!!!!!!!

This post is a prime example of why one can't get into a reasonable discussion on this subject. There's always those tacky and rude people that just won't let you have a normal discussion. It has to turn to personal attacks.

    2 flies on the ceiling...PANIC!!!!!!!

Have you been reading this thread? I was responding to the two people who were implying this example proves that donating the primary is the safest way to dive. I pointed out that there are other opinions, and we don't have to get into another long debate about it. One side of the debate was...

    2 flies on the ceiling...PANIC!!!!!!!

One could also see this as an excellent example of why one shouldn't have their hoses wrapped under their equipment and coiled around their body. If the taking diver comes at you panicked and with saucer eyes, they may not wait for you to uncoil the hose and gently hand the reg to them. I...

Spare Air have you tested? Do you Dare? Do you care? Really what's in there?

Why do you think I would care about my post count? Unlike you, I don't even make it visible. Do I get some sort of prize if I post a lot? It would be cool if I did, I would post a lot more. Anyway, I just don't think you can control the conversation like you want to. This is the internet, and...

Spare Air have you tested? Do you Dare? Do you care? Really what's in there?

Because people who don't own spare air want to comment on your question, even if you don't like what they have to say and find them unqualified to say it. No one, (but you) wants them to start their own thread just so they can have a discussion about "spare air for people who don't currently own...

Spare Air have you tested? Do you Dare? Do you care? Really what's in there?

Maybe we should have one thread for people that do own spare air, one thread for people who don't own spare air, one thread for those who used to own spare air, and one thread for people who are considering owning spare air. Or maybe not. Instead, we should just accept the fact that a...

    Doubles, Weight and Dry

Another day in the market place of ideas. Some peoples stock goes up, other people's stock goes down. The discussion is good either way.

    Integrated weight vs. non-integrated

Thal made a good point one day on an issue related to this. Basically, it's easier to rescue a distressed diver on the surface if you can ditch your weightbelt. Those weren't his exact words, but he said he's had to quickly ditch his weight belt 2 times in his life - both times were when he...

    Diving from a Kayak

Good write up Halemano. I thought I posted that earlier, but I guess it didn't go through. Yesterday I tried my first dive off a kayak. It was pretty simple. We have a yearly pass to rent kayaks for free after 4:00pm from Sam's Tours. So a friend and I left work a little early and went down to...

Spin Off: Do you refuse to dive with a DM/quide in a new location?

Sorry, I've never dived outside of these little islands. That means guided dives out on the reefs, and guide-less when my friends and I do the wrecks. There's no recall system used here, that I'm aware of. Nor would a helicopter come get anyone out on the reefs. I don't think another boat in...

    Your scuba set-up

I dive warm tropics water. For regs I have the cheapest set of Mares regs you can get from scubatoys. I have a Zeagle 5# SS backplate, a 30# Oxycheg Razor extreme wing, dive rite harness and cams, and oxycheq channel weight. My mask is a basic cheap mask made in Taiwan, I'm not sure it...

Spin Off: Do you refuse to dive with a DM/quide in a new location?

The only thing that bothers me about this plan is that the an emergency could cause the boat to leave with an injured diver, and you would be left in the water. If you aren't with the group, you might not notice everyone ascending, and by the time you figured out what was going on, it would be...

Spin Off: Do you refuse to dive with a DM/quide in a new location?

In Palau, a good dive guide really makes a big difference in the quality of the show. It would be a pretty bad idea to come here and dive without a guide. Maybe it's different in other places, I don't know.

Spin Off: Do you refuse to dive with a DM/quide in a new location?

If one has a guide, they should stay with the guide. Because if one splits off from the guide, there's a chance they could be left floating by themselves in the water at the end of your dive. All it takes is one medical emergency that requires the guide to surface and take an injured diver...

To dive or not to dive, that is the question

When I first started I also didn't like the deeper depths for reasons similar to what you stated. I felt like I was locked into the dive, and I couldn't come up when I wanted to, (in case I wanted to breath normal air again.) That sort of triggered a panic cycle. It just wasn't much fun. I got...

    Ow- Aow?

I think going there early is a good idea. Something like 70% of all diver deaths occur within their first 20 dives. Having more supervision during that period would be useful. Also, I'm in the camp that believes OW+AOW is what basic scuba training should look like if Padi could trick people...

Lessons to be learned-Death in Palau

That's one of the good things about Sam's. They have a lot of boats going out, and almost all english speaking guides. They can mix and match based on experience.

Lessons to be learned-Death in Palau

To be fair, it's only a few spots that are like that in Palau. There are also lots of easy going drift and wall dives, and about 70 WWII wrecks, too. But there's a reason guides started using reef hooks at Blue Corner and the Peleliu sites. Sometimes the current is so strong there, and you need...

Lessons to be learned-Death in Palau

Everyone wants to do Blue Corner when the conditions are right. But what "the conditions are right" means is that there are are strong currents that bring out the sharks. So the best time to do the Blue Corner is when it's at it's most challenging. The problem is that the boats get too big...
