    Why dont I sink?

I think you're nervous and holding too much air. How do you do in a pool without a wetsuit?

    Night divers unite!

Well, I was in an advanced dive class, and really didn't want to jump out of the boat into the dark water. However, peer pressure set in, and I did the giant stride off the back of the boat with the rest of them. It was an awesome experience, and I love it. I would advise going to a spot...

Mustache causing a slow leak in mask...

Clear your mask every so often. The water helps to keep your mask fog free. I've been diving with a mustache for a while. You just get used to it.

    Half a turn back

Not half the way back, half a turn. It takes several full turns to go from full off to full on. I was told to do it, so that the person checking the tank could easily tell it's state. All the way on, and they might presume all the way off.

What kind of bridge do you live under? After all, isn't that where you trolls live?

Can you learn scuba from tv?

Bulletproof monk isn't a documentary, but a fictional movie. Your chances of learning to dive while watching TV is nonexistent.

    Sea sickness

Try the accupressure C-bands. They work by stimulating your accupressure anti-nausea point. You can usually find these close to the seasick remedies in the drug store. They don't cause drowsiness, and they are reusable. They work well for my kids for deep sea fishing. Also, I find a good...

Afraid of fish . . . how to deal with it

IMHO, there is little reason to dive if you're afraid of fish. She needs to get over it first.

How happy are you with today's level of Diver Education?

Agreed. Back in the late 1980s when I was an assistant instructor, we generally could figure out our problem students in the first lap. I agree with the free-diving skills as well. I don't on the snorkel, I think a purge snorkel is the best thing for snorkeling since fins...... Agreed. As...

Competitive Diving - Save the Dive Industry

I think a "Sea Hunt" or some type of TV show that featured diving for the 20teens would be a good thing. I also think that reshowing the Jacques Cousteau film on TV would be cool. They caught some amazing things on film.

    Shark Attack - Fact

From reading, it seems the whole idea of the death squares is similar to chaff that fighter jets use to avoid radar-guided missiles. Dulling shouldn't have any effect. Bending would change the way it sunk, so I'd avoid it, without any other evidence.

    Shark Attack - Fact

Well, if I were an instructor (I was an assistant instructor in an earlier phase of my life), I wouldn't dwell on it. I would simply tell the truth. In my 200+ dives, I have never seen a shark besides a nurse shark while Scuba diving. I personally think that most sharks in Florida (southeast...

    Shark Attack - Fact

I wouldn't worry about it. Sharks aren't going to stay around unless you're feeding them or spearfishing (same thing :-) )

Best way to study fish identifcation?

I would imagine a book on Japanese sea life would be useful, as you are fairly close-by. The best thing is to learn the families of fish, since, for the most part, the species within a family have the same general shape and style of living (yes, there are exceptions).

Guitarfish - maybe a bit OT

It is possible you saw one. I'm not sure about how common they are, but they do live there. They live along the U.S. coast from North Carolina through the Gulf to the Yucatan.

    The Beginner's Mixture

IMHO, it depends on the geographic location. In South Florida, no. There are plenty of dives for a new diver to do that are under 60', and hence ,there is little or no need for nitrox. In the FL Panhandle, most of our better dive sites are at 70-90 ft. When I was certified in 1981, my last two...
