Blue Water in South Padre Island

It has been a rough couple of weeks with all of the rains and Tropical storms, but blue water is here again. American Diving is enticing divers back to the Clipper this weekend with an offer to do a two tank dive to the Clipper on Sunday, August 1st for only $125 per diver. You must sign up by...

To my SPI diver friends RE: Hurricane Alex

Padre Island is back up and running. Never lost power for more than a few hours. Lots of wind and rain, but thankfully no major damage.

South Padre Island Recommended Dive Sites??

SPI has some great dives reasonably close to shore. Our two most popular dives are the Texas Clipper and the Rigs (the Iron Reefs). There are a bunch of wrecks sunk around SPI too that used to be our bread and butter, but because of the popularity of the Clipper and easy access to the Rigs, they...

    Flower Garden trips CANCELLED

Why not come dive the Texas Clipper, the rigs and the wrecks around South Padre Island. I am sure once the spill is cleaned up the Fling will resume normal operations. Take the opportunity to dive South Padre this year and head back to the FG next. Two people can do two days of 2-tank diving on...

    Just curious about quality regulators

Just curious, why did you ask in the first place? Appears you already have your mind made up.

    Just curious about quality regulators

Exactly! Buy an Atomic and pair it with a Halcyon bp and wing! Excellent advice! Seriously though. Go to your local dive store, talk to the instructor and ask him what he is diving. Then buy from him. Avoid internet "deals", support your local dive store.

    S. Padre questions

I stand corrected..... went out to the Jetties today and had a good 10 to 20 feet of viz. Doesn't sound like much, but this time of year its usually 10 - 20 inches, so we'll take it. Lots of spearfishers out today.

    S. Padre questions

TM, Definitely hit up the rigs and the Clipper when in Padre. Although the surface temp may be near 77, there will most likely be a thermocline where the temp can be 10 degrees F colder. I also recommend to bring a Full 3mm or 3/2 anyway, since diving barnacle encrusted wrecks and rigs it is...

    Texas Dive Show and Gathering

I'll be at the show with the South Padre Island Convention Center and Visitors Bureau promoting the Texas Clipper and trips with American Diving. We'd love to come up and have a beer after the show. I've been to the Gingerman in Austin. Great selection on tap. Yummmmmm, Beer.

Where to find info on tables?

What about Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM)? Are leaving it out of the discussion. It is not the same thing as VPM. RGBM was formulated by Dr. Bruce Weinke and is based on work started by "David Yount (Varying Permeability Model, VPM) and Tom Kunkle (Surfactant Stabilized Model). Yet...

Question about tipping on SCUBA trips.

I believe a minimum tip on a day boat should be $10. Liveaboards are like restaurants; tip at least 10 - 20%. Those are the absolute minimums! There are a ton of expenses involved in running a US based dive operation. Boat maintenance alone will eat you alive, but add to that fuel...

    Texas Clipper

The new engine is at the dock. Should have it going in tonight and ready for Saturday's dive trip to the Clipper. (whew, glad to be up and running again, stinks being a dive shop with no dive boat) Conditions at the Clipper yesterday were pretty decent. Waters were flat calm going out and...

    Texas Clipper

It starts at 65ft and hits bottom around 132. Though you should plan the majority of your dive in the 70 - 100 ft range (perfect for diving EAN32). I am heading out there tomorrow, so will come by and give a report on conditions. The Diver 1 looks like it will be Friday or Saturday before...

Whalesharks off of South Padre Island

We came across a school of whale sharks on Sunday on the Iron Reef, Seana's Rig, about 17 miles offshore. I jumped in the water and shot some video (link to youtube)of two of them and when I turned around to go back to the boat found three more. Some divers in another location on the rig were...

30 Whale sharks at the Flower Gardens!

Got my wish. We had two of them on rig 1133 today. ( go to Captain's Log for Photos) Also had a pod of 200 - 300 spinner dolphin follow the dive boat around for a while as we were leaving. I shot some video, but it might be awhile before I get it edited.

    South Padre dive Op recommendations?

American Diving is pretty much the only ticket in town. The sites range from 9 to 25 miles off shore. Water has been blue and you nailed the current dead on -- variable and unpredictable. You can get a diver discount at the Howard Johnson and Ramada on the Island, just call and ask 'em.

Sun Fish in the Gulf of Mexico???

I was not aware of them. Thanks for the heads up! Pretty majestic animal. I swam with a whale shark down here last summer that was pretty cool, but I think I was more in awe of this fish just for the shear oddness of it. It was like nothing I had ever seen before.
