What the heck does the rule of thirds have to do with recreational diving?

I'll dive thirds when I need to get back to an ascent line and want to spend most of the dive in transit on a larger wreck. Free ascents in the North Atlantic are not wise. And that's also reserving rock bottom for the ascent. That does NOT mean I'd ascend with 2/3 of my gas, only that I'm coming back toward the ascent line with 2/3.

no

I'll review the material again tomorrow ...
however I plan to be at my safety stop with 1/3 air remaining.

Why? That seems arbitrary and wasteful. I plan my dives so that I'll have enough gas to get me and an OOG buddy back to the boat doing all of our stops (from our deepest depth). Why save much more?
