I just don't log dives
About 20 years ago I was lucky enough to dive off the coast of Australia on a day trip. I immediately suffered from a gag reflex. The dive guide made a quick adjustment to the 2nd stage mouthpiece which made it narrower, this resolved the gag reflex issue and I enjoyed the rest of the dive. I remember an audible click as the width was narrowed, adjusting the shape of the mouthpiece.

Last year I started to learn to dive in the UK and sometimes I'm impacted by a temporary gag reflex. I've found using a smaller (and narrower) mouthpiece prevents this but wondered if it was possible to buy adjustable ones like I remember from Australia. I've searched but without luck, maybe this has become an obsolete design. Does anyone remember something similar?

Don’t know about adjustable, but I have a very strong gag reflex, too. The AquaLung Comfobite mouthpieces are excellent. Apeks (owned by AL) has a similar version, but I prefer the AL.

I use a "molded" mouthpiece (molded to fit my teeth). Can't recall the brand name, but you mold it so it fits like a mouthguard that atheletes use or to prevent grinding teeth while asleep. I got this because my regular MP was almost blown out of my mouth during a current. Very comfortable. Not great for practicing buddy breathing. Don't know how this would affect gag reflex.

Depends on what sets off your gag reflex. With me, it’s the long sides that go towards the back of your mouth that set me off.
