Hi all--I'm new to the boards, and pretty new to scuba in general--I'll have my AOW soon, but all my diving to date has been in Puget Sound. I snorkelled around Phi Phi a couple years ago and I'm anxious to head back and get beneath the waves... I'm hoping to draw on everyone's experiences... Has anyone been diving in Tarutao Natl' Park? I'm headed to SE Asia in November for about 4 weeks, and although I'm hoping to get up to the Similians to do some diving, the prices seem high and I'm flying in and out of Singapore anyway--so Tarutao sounds like a good option... Does anyone have any recommendations for dive operations out of Ko Lipe? Thanks much! Cal

Hi Cal,

The first time I went to Tarutao National Park was in Feb'00. I stayed at "Andaman Resort" in Koh Li Peh ('Koh' is Thai word for 'island') - a small but nice resort with 30 bungalows and the price was only 400 baht = US$10 at that time. I went snorkling at Jabang Channel and was fascinated with the abundant of colourful soft corals. When I got back to Bangkok, I registered for Scuba Diving class right away! Ealry this year, I went there again with M/V PP Harmony, the live-aboard departed from Phuket. I was so glad to dive at my inspiring site for scuba diving and found that it's still beautiful as it used to.

Diving from the live-aboard is a good option to dive in South Andaman Sea as they will take you to many great diving sites. For example, during my 3 days trip, I went diving in Tarutao National Park on day 1 - dive sites include Jabang Channel, 8 miles Rock where Whale Sharks are frequently spotted, and Adang-rawi reefs. On day 2, they took me to Lanta Marine National Park to dive Hin Daeng (Red Rock) & Hin Muang (Purple Rock - both are Thailand's top dive sites), Koh Rok and Koh Ha where I enjoyed a fantastic cave dive. The last day, on the way back to Phuket, I went diving the King Cruiser Wreck, Anemone Reef and Hin Musang (Shark Point).

Anyway, if you prefer to stay on Li Peh Island, I'm sure Andaman Resort operates scuba diving. I'll try to find the contact number for you as soon as possible but for now, you can learn more about Tarutao & Li Peh from these websites below :

The Andaman Resort's Tel. No. is 66-74-711-313.
At present the resort is not operating due to the monsoon season (Jun.-Oct.) They will re-open on November 1st.

You can try local travel agency "Satun Travel & Ferry" : 66-74-711-453 to check on any other resorts on Li Peh.

Juv,

Do you know if the monsoon will be pretty much over by Nov 1st ? I am thinking of going to Lipeh the weekend of Nov 2 but was worried that it may still be the tailend of the monsoon.

I think I'm going to try and hit a few spots--starting with the Similan/Surins and making my way down the coast... Some climbing at Railay and then some more diving in Tarutao... The trip is just a month away!!!!
