USAirways has some esavers to DomRep in mid Dec. Anyone have any experience diving there? Good lodging? Dive Operator? Temps conditions in Dec?

I went twice last year.

The first time I stayed in Punta Cana. The resort was nicer than Boca Chica, but the diving was some of the least exciting I've ever done (with the exception of one trip to Baya Hibe(SP?)).

My second stay was in Boca Chica. It's doesn't rank up there with St John or Grand Cayman...but I still enjoyed the diving quite a bit.

From what I saw in both locations it is fairly rustic. Mainly skiffs w/outboards, purely backrolls. To get back in you hand up weights, then BC and then grab the side of the boat and kick like crazy while pulling yourself into the boat. The divemasters were phenominal though and made sure you saw all that the area had to offer.

I would definetly go again. If it's anything like I remember, you should be able to get your flight, lodging and meals(all inclusive in most place, booze too) for under $1000 on a six day stay.

If you stay on the resort it's a nice place to visit. Going out in town seemed to be a bit hazardous, I only did it once...very impoverished, lots of begging and many guys trying to rent out their sisters. There are gaurds at the gates with shotguns wich also made me wary of going out on the town at night. On resort they seemed to have some nice clubs and a decent casino.

To sum up if you don't mind staying on the resort and you're not looking for big dive boats with meals served onboard, Boca Chica is a pretty good spot to check out. Especially if you're trying to save a few bucks.

Check some websites though, I've heard people talk of better diving sights also.

Enjoy,

I have been twice. Once in Punta Cana and then in Puerto Plata. The diving is not breath taking, but I liked it. Very relaxing and I just love being in the water. Both resorts I stayed at were great. I am also one that likes going out into the local population and seeing their life and spending time with them. I usually will get a cab driver and tell him what I want to do and let him take me to the good spots of town. I have found that if you are nice to them and so interest in their culture they will take wonderful care of you. I end up with the same driver during my whole trip. I really ejoy the laid back atmosphere. I am going back to Puerto Plata at the end of this month.

If you like the big all-inclusive resorts for a great price then the DR is a good fit. The diving is average to poor in most areas. The best diving is in the Bayhibe area (near La Romana), probably not worth it to dive anywhere else other then the south coast. Dive ops there are pretty basic but again fairly cheap if you shop around.

I thought it was good enough that I intend to return one day. Be happy to answer any other questions you may have
