read the whole story:

Taucher Tom

"Bark, Bark, Bark!. . . Bark, Bark!"

"What is it Lassie? Tommy's in trouble? He fell down the well? Let's go, Boy!"

My dad's well for his house wasn't working so I went in to take a look. It was just wide enough that my tank was bumping one side of the wall and my bent arm was touching the other. Going down feet first, the black stuff on the walls silted the water so bad that at five feet, I couldn't see the surface. I touched bottom at 17' and could only think of the stories I had read of dead bodies being found in wells. Turned out the check valve on the end of the water line was defective and I didn't have the urge to dive one again.
