Hi all!

My wife and I are heading out for memorial day weekend and staying at the hermosa hotel. Just wondering if any fellow scubaboarders would be out there. Anyone (Dr Bill) know how the conditions have been???

Talk to you later,
Tony.

Jaye and I might come out Monday. About 50 - 50 right now. I was there last Sunday - mellow. Funny, tho. Lots of people there in the AM, by 2:30 the place was a ghost town.

My wife, daughters, and I will be there Sunday on the first boat from Long Beach. If you see us, come say hi. We're pretty easy to spot, the youngest kid has bright yellow stripes down the arms of her wetsuit. We usually gear up just to the right of the stairs. Wish we could stay the whole weekend, but we have to come back that evening.

I was in Avalon yesterday for a meeting and walked over to take a look a the dive park. Conditions looked great. I asked a couple of divers coming up the steps how the Viz was and they said it was fantastic.

I also spoke with the air van lady and she said there are tons of bat rays in there and a giant black sea bass has taken up residence there.

One of these days, I need to go dive CP. I have dove the west end of Catalina a bunch of times, but never made it to Avalon. Mostly becuase I don't have a dive buddy that would go out there with me.

I got my C-card about a month ago. I haven't had time to go out since, other than last weekend when my buddy and I tried to do a Beach dive in Malibu. We had to call it off since the visiablity was aweful. Anyways, I'm going to be taking the first boat out of Long beach myself on Sunday to Avalon as well.

Dr. Bill is in Florida, I believe. You may have to rely on some more recent visitors :)

Happy Diving!

I spent some time talking to Dr Bill last time I was there (two weeks ago), he mentioned that the bat rays come in this time of year. You'll find them down about 60 at the old swim platform (to the left of the stairsm facing out)

That day, I came across one near the "poles" laid out in the sand about 30-40 feet, it was feeding. Normally, they don't like people near them, but this one was going at it with a vengeance. Could've cared less that we were there. Stirring up the bottom like you couldn't believe, to the point that I could not see the bottom from 2 feet off of it. Pretty cool. Of course, no pics of that incident - too much silt :)

Awesome!!

I love bat rays more than anything else. On my very first certification dive at San Clemente, my wife and I descended almost right on top of one. We were face to face for awhile before he flew off. Then... a huge giant sea bass that was the the size of a small car swam right up to us and circled us once or twice. Yes, that still ranks as one of my all time greatest dives. We haven't seen one since but I'm always looking for them. I'm on a quest to try to find an octopus, horn shark or angel shark on this trip. We're planning on at least one night dive. Good to hear from you all, I'll be looking for ya. We head out Saturday at 8:30 leave Monday evening.

Tony.

Once again... awesome diving at casino park.
I was surrounded by six bat rays for about 15 minutes on the first dive!
The kicker was that my wife gave me a new camera as an early anniversary present and as instructed took only the housing to make sure it wouldn't flood. There I was with bat rays all around and an empty housing. Also finally found an octopus!! probably not so exciting for the local socal'ers but for us Arizona desert rats it was pretty awesome. Also got to have lunch with with Mo2vation and Jaye and met Xsandman3? always good to see fellow scubaboarders.

We hunted and hunted, but couldn't find him.

For the rest of the readers, Tony and his lovely wife Michelle descended down one of the bouylines, and the Octo was sitting on top of a rock in full view. Dude rolled over there, and the critter crawled into a crack, and sort of peeked out... Awesome pic.

Jaye and I saw the rays - right where you said they were. Two came over to me and got right in my face as I was hovering... I was holding my breath as long as I could.... so the three of us were face to face to face. When I finally exhaled, they took off.

We had three great dives on Monday. It was great to lunch wif you and wifie.
