A friend sent me this query and it seems really silly to me, but I'm posting it anyway. Any observations from my kayakin' buddies? I'm thinking coincidence but what the heck, I thought I'd ask.

Got a question - my two adult grand-daughters were here a couple of weeks ago, and they took a kayak trip. A friend told them to get a blue kayaks, that the manatees were attracted to blue. They thought this person was kidding, until the day they took their trip and two manatees swam right up to a fellow adventurer in a blue kayak and began pushing it around. I told them I knew a "kayak expert" and would find out the truth for them! LOL

Well, all I can say is that I went kayaking in West Palm in an orange, inflatable kayak, and we had two manatees come up and put their heads on the side of the kayak, looking for all the world as though they wanted to be petted. (We later had another one try to swamp the thing with his tail!) I wonder if they are just curious creatures, and want to investigate these manatee-sized, quiet things on top of the water.

My wife's kayak is lime green and mine is sky blue. We had two manatees investigate us a week ago and they seemed equally interested in both. I'm no manatee expert but I work in the veterinary industry and most animals I'm aware of don't see colors. My guess is TSandM is likely on the right track with them being curious animal.

TO chime in with others.. My Yum Yum yellow Yak brings them in all the time. It is not legal to "molest" manatee's but so is speeding and smoking pot so.. here is what I do..

When I see a Tee I slow down.. if you ae going to paddle enter and exit the stroke very very very quietly. Tee's respond to splashing.. a violent slap of their tail is how they warn the others about predators and danger. If you drift along they will come right up to you to see what you are and sometimes if you will scratch them or they will bump you around a bit. I have also had Dolphins swim up to me roll up and look right at me. Buying my Yak is right up there with my first Flippers and Goggles -- opened up a whole new world.
