Automatic refresh causing Chrome to lock up

I'm having problems with Chrome locking up when the automatic refresh of articles kicks in.

Windows 7 Build 7601, Chrome 61.0.3163.100 (all 64 bit)

Is there a way to disable the automatic refresh?

It's part of the underlying program that we have no control over. Be sure to use the very latest Chrome and you should be fine.
