Ok, here is what I did. Although I am pretty handy at things all of this was done by hand without sophisticated tools. Just a saw, drill, grinder and then I blasted it with baking soda to give it a matte finish because the ABS comes Glossy. bought a small sheet of black 1/4" thick ABS plastic from McMastercarr which was about $25. The piece you can't see is the one on the inside which is 2" wide and is slide into the padded back pad on the inside. The outside piece is about 4" wide and it goes past the square holes about 3/4"top and bottom. I got 3 back plate screws from DGX which you can see that bolts the inside ABS to the outside ABS. I cut 2 pieces same width as outside piece and used a heat gun to soften the ABS as it responds very well to heat. I used an old alum tank not in use anymore to mold the heated ABS to take shape of the tank and let then cool. The phillips screws seen go all the way through the BCD to the inner piece of ABS. As I assembled this contraption, I used 3M 5200 black and glued it all together. If you have ever used 5200 you know what it is capable of. I made sure to stay away from all edges so the 5200 would not squeeze out and be ugly. Tank straps are all the way behind the inside piece of ABS so the tank weight pulls on the entire assembly when walking. I also sat at the kitchen table and cut all the sewing that held the plastic squares in place to the BCD and removed them as they were all broken into crumbs. Daughter just used it at Blue Grotto and worked great. I think its better than the 2 plastic squares that Sherwood puts on them. My back up BCD is also a Sherwood Avid but so far it has not come apart. I use an Aqua Lung Dimention i3 back inflate as primary and hardly ever use the Avid. If It got more use it probably would fall apart too. When it does it will get a make over too. This problem just caught my eye as the first posts in the recalls forum. I had an Avid as my first BC and while I did not have the same issue, I had an issue with the bladder leaking along the lower hem on the left side. There was no visible damage to the BC but the whole lower left hem would be blowing bubbles through the material. My BC was only slightly over one year old when I noticed that the bladder was leaking. The following Monday I called Sherwood Scuba and explained the issue that I was having. The rep propently stated that this is a common issue with divers that are cat owners and they find that 99% of the time it is due to a cat either clawing on or chewing on the BC. I then told him that we did not own a cat so that should no be an issue. After my statement he said that I could have my local shop send the BC in for inspection (at my cost) but if they found any pet hair on it it would promptly reject the claim and I would have to pay for the return shipping if I wanted the BC back. Well I do have a golden retriever so pet hair is a clothing line, fashion accessory and also a food group in our house. Ultimately the selling dealer ended up eating the price of the bc in trade for another brand. Now since that time I have purchased much more dive gear for me and and two of my sons, not one piece of it being Sherwood. I just don't know why some manufacturers won't take care of their customers when the product fails. There are some small dive equipment manufacturers that are treating their customers excellent and gaining a loyal following. All the while the large Scuba manufacturers are scratching their heads wondering why they are losing market share.

I hear ya. I also had sherwood regs for my son and daughter. The plastic front covers disintegrated as you can see in the pics. sherwood again was of no help and pretty much blamed it all on me. They wouldn't even replace the plastic covers. since then I have spent a few thousand dollars on replacing gear and adding gear, gadgets, new computers and what not. I am proud to say that none of it is sherwood. At the time of the failures, the equipment had only been fresh water springs. No salt water and no pools. I think sherwood and suunto took the same customer service classes... DSCN0950 - Copy.JPG DSCN0955.JPG
