Looks like we'll be going to stay and dive in Tulamben in a few weeks. We'll probably be leaving for Tulamben from the Bali airport midday after coming back from a couple of days in Flores/Komodo. I know our hotel offers pickup service, I think at about $40 for the two of us. From what I've been reading, it sounds like that's about what the official airport taxi rate is as well. Is it likely we can negotiate a better deal by walking out of the airport? How much better? And is doing that a huge hassle? How far do you have to walk to get to the non-airport taxi stands? We'll have all of our gear (airlines willing), but our bags roll. Or is Perama a viable option? I'm not ruling out the idea of renting a car, either (the worst places either of us has personally driven have been Paris and Dominica--we're accustomed to big American cities and Mexico and are not fraidy cats behind the wheel.) Any better ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The price you quote to get to Tulamben is very reasonable.

If you hire a car be sure to have your international driving licence with you. (but would recommend car and driver)

You have a reasonable walk to get outside the airport and there re no taxi stands as you would know it close by. You would need to try and flag one down.
