for me the "best" way is the fastest and safest. we recently used island air and were very pleased. but it was expensive.

captain Angelo provides personal service. he met us by the coffee shop just outside of arrivals and then supervised checking our luggage in and escorted us through security. the flight from roatan to utila is about 11 minutes long.

Rent a house. Dive with Eco Marine. With them you will feel you are on vacation with some diving. A more personal, relaxed service. They are enthusiastic about diving and often go to unusual dive sites. Most other dive shops (BICD etc) have lots of courses going on, so feel rushed and go to less interesting sites.

Deep Blue has a great shore dive. It is a wall starting at about 20’ and ending in the sand at 65’. However, I understand that Deep Blue is experiencing difficulties. I have dived pretty close to Utopia Village. Like Deep Blue, the shore dive should be very good. Deep Blue has a beach but the shallow water is quite rocky. The waves do not get that big. But getting in and out can be tricky. The site at Utopia looked like it was sandy but one cannot tell from off shore.

We dove 3 dives at Deep Blue. On the afternoon dive, we took a couple of extra tanks. The boat would drop us off at the wall and we would make our way along it until we were up to the resort and then we swam in. I think you could probably do that at Utopia.

i've lived on the island on and off for the last 8 years and have stayed in many of the hotels and rentals.
without doubt these are my favorites:-

with treasure beach and sandy cay you can dive with Utila Cays Diving, my favorite shop on Utila. a maximum of 8 divers, personalized service and they go to the north side every day, highly recommended.

if you want a resort, Utopia is hands down the nicest on the island, nothing else comes close.
