I have a light and motion mountain bike light (10w HID) that I am wondering if I can make a housing for it so I can take it diving.

Here is the light I have:

I wonder if I can purcahse an old canister light from EBay or something, take out the guts and just put my new light inside of it?

Any suggesions would be helpfult.

Thanks

I bet you could, have you taken it apart yet?

I presume it has a ballast, is the ballast in the head or with the battery?

What are the dimensions of the bulb?
What are the dimensions of the ballast?

I am using led bike light in my housing, in case lost on a drift because it is so small. I find the bike industry is way ahead with light technology.

It flips on with a mangnet tail.

The Ballast is in the light head. It is real small. I have not taken it apart yet. I will try and take it apart tonight. The switch to turn the light on/off is also on the light head. This may present a problem since I will need to figure out a way to turn the light on....

You can probably just move your switch to the canister, normally the switch will switch power between the battery and the ballast on and off vs switching power between the ballast and the lamp (which is hi voltage).

After opening up my light, it became clear that this project was beyond my skills. I also ride my bike at night at least 2 times a week, so I did not want to have to mess around with converting it to/ from "dive" mode.

I decided to just purchase a 10W HID canister light - DiveRite C-MR11

Got a fairly good deal on it. I want to learn as much as I can about HIDs and may attempt something similar at a later date. Thanks for all of the help!

I built a HID divelight forn the Trailtech (ATV) lights.
These are solarc lamps and I suspect the very same lamp and ballast as is in your bike light. Here's alink to the phots of my light and the drawings for it.

Thanks Mike. It looks like you have a lot of experience at this stuff. Very impressive drawing details!
