What a day for a daydream yesterday was.

My dive buddy and me took the early morning express over to Catalina yesterday to particpate in the Avalon Bay cleanup. Unlike last year's nasty weather this year was outstanding conditions. Air temp probably in the upper 60s to low 70s (at least it seemed that way wearing the cumbersome 7 mil). Water temp was a very balmy 59, very very nice.

We did our cleanup dive just west of the green pier. There didn't seem to be as many people participating in the cleanup this year for some reason. We managed to collect a few empty beer cans, a ladies shoe, a pair of panties and the remnants of a lounge chair. It just blows my mind when I see some of the things people pull out of the water. When we finished our cleanup we went over to Casino Point to do some more diving and there people brought out an outboard motor, a couple more lounge chairs, a VISA card ( I busted up on this one because I got to thinking about the commercial with the guy that lost his credit card in the jungle and the Chimps had a field day with the card, thinking the fish could have used the card for their personal pleasure).

After the cleanup we did 2 dives off Casino Point. This was very enjoyable. The first dive we just cruised around in the kelp. Saw tons of marine life (garibaldi, calicos, kelpfish, BIG sargos and a couple of very big sheephead), we also encountered quite a few OW students going thru their skills. First dive, max depth 46 fsw, water temp 59, vis 35 +/-, bottomtime 35 minutes. All yes, and my strobe decided not to work on my camera for some unknown reason (I had just put new batteries in it the night before and it was working fine).

Dive 2 - after about a 1 1/2 hour SI munching on some lunch and watching people going in and out of the water we dropped back down. Payed our respects to the Jacques Cousteau monument and proceeded towards the "wall". Max depth 70 fsw, water temp 59, vis about 30 ft, bottomtime 25 minutes.

All in all, an outstanding day in socal, and topped off with an absolutely fantastic dive day.

I was helping out at Step Beach. Lots of boat parts, more underwear (what goes on out there?), the usual bottles, cans, glassware, and a wallet with credit cards...

Will you try to contact the owner of the wallet, to return it to him or her?

And more importantly - any good gossip material in the wallet? You know - pictures, etc...

Happy Diving!

Scuba-sass :)

Yes, we turned it in to the authorities...nothing too exciting in it, though. Note to self: Remove all nude photos from wallet...

Sorry we missed you. Didn't know you were working the cleanup. Otherwise I would have tried looking you up.

Any idea how many divers actually participated this year? Was it less than last year?

Did you do any diving yourself during the cleanup or afterwards over at the Point?

With the weather we are having right now it is so hard to have to go to work. Conditions are great.

Also, just a little note - last year at this time of year water temp was 55, this year 59 - can you say watch out El Nino is coming.

I thought of you guys that day! I spent that entire Saturday sitting in traffic school , thinking that I could be diving at Catalina instead.

Thank you Kelpmermaid for letting me know about the event in advance. I'd have been there if it were possible.

92630 - Well, there is always next year...and Chamber Day/Evening comes up May 1. I have posted a link on the Calendar.

Socal...I think there were a few less divers this year. I don't know if this is reflective of the economy or last year's miserable weather... I understand that the California Wreck Divers had a dinner the same evening featuring James Cameron as the speaker. There's also a bug going around...but it was beautiful out there this weekend. Yes, I did get in a dive the next day, so all was not dry.
