What a day for a daydream yesterday was.
My dive buddy and me took the early morning express over to Catalina yesterday to particpate in the Avalon Bay cleanup. Unlike last year's nasty weather this year was outstanding conditions. Air temp probably in the upper 60s to low 70s (at least it seemed that way wearing the cumbersome 7 mil). Water temp was a very balmy 59, very very nice.
We did our cleanup dive just west of the green pier. There didn't seem to be as many people participating in the cleanup this year for some reason. We managed to collect a few empty beer cans, a ladies shoe, a pair of panties and the remnants of a lounge chair. It just blows my mind when I see some of the things people pull out of the water. When we finished our cleanup we went over to Casino Point to do some more diving and there people brought out an outboard motor, a couple more lounge chairs, a VISA card ( I busted up on this one because I got to thinking about the commercial with the guy that lost his credit card in the jungle and the Chimps had a field day with the card, thinking the fish could have used the card for their personal pleasure).
After the cleanup we did 2 dives off Casino Point. This was very enjoyable. The first dive we just cruised around in the kelp. Saw tons of marine life (garibaldi, calicos, kelpfish, BIG sargos and a couple of very big sheephead), we also encountered quite a few OW students going thru their skills. First dive, max depth 46 fsw, water temp 59, vis 35 +/-, bottomtime 35 minutes. All yes, and my strobe decided not to work on my camera for some unknown reason (I had just put new batteries in it the night before and it was working fine).
Dive 2 - after about a 1 1/2 hour SI munching on some lunch and watching people going in and out of the water we dropped back down. Payed our respects to the Jacques Cousteau monument and proceeded towards the "wall". Max depth 70 fsw, water temp 59, vis about 30 ft, bottomtime 25 minutes.
All in all, an outstanding day in socal, and topped off with an absolutely fantastic dive day.
