Today I went in off Stage Fort Park, and the sea was full of these weird strings -- I assume they are strings of eggs. Each egg is 1-2 mm across, bright purple, and has a pink-purple tassel some 5 mm long hanging off it. Quite striking, especially since some of these strings are over 2' long. They were floating in the water column, seemingly at perfect neutral buoyancy. Next time I will bring a camera.

Any idea what they are?

They could be a colony of salps
