New close-up and time-lapse footage of the crown of thorns sea star, which feeds on hard corals and occasionally undergoes mass outbreaks on reefs. I also rave about the animal’s unusual reproductive biology, including its ability to self-clone as pelagic larvae. Thanks to my colleagues Dr. Rene Abesamis and Dr. James Reimer for pointers to the new literature on the animal.
In the video I try to combine popular science on this interesting animal with horror-movie like footage of the COTS crawling over my camera. I hope that works.
The end of the video has a vivid description of how it feels to be stung by one of these. Hint: not good.
