Couple of low-key, off-the-beaten path options:

Camaron Dorado, taqueria on the transversal road way back. All kinds of tacos, but I am most fond of the shrimp ceviche ones with an extra squeeze of lime.

Billy's on 65 avenida south of Q Roo. Nothing like grabbing a chicken with all the fixins on the way in from the airport. And the poc chuc! Salty delicious pork candy!

Note: there is NOT a lot of English spoken at either place but don't be deterred!
