This was an amazing week of diving in Cocos Island, the only question is where to begin? In our last DeepSee Pilot's report we discussed the changes in the deep waters of Cocos Island. Since then we have been coordinating with the Center of Marine Research from The University of Costa Rica. By placing thermometers at various locations we are able to provide scientists with a 24h record of any changes that occur and establish a benchmark to gauge temperature variances.
The dives on the wall were very good and we were visited by a hundreds of juvenile squid. This was an incredible site because we typically only see one or two, but to see them in the hundreds was spectacular. Fried egg jellyfish continue to roam the areas above the ledge providing us with dramatic images (like the one shown).
Frogfish were on a love spree and we were witnesses for the first time to their courting behaviors. We also took note of one particular female who was clearly showing a body full of a new generation of baby frogfish.
But our highlight this trip was the incredible sight of a female whale shark visiting the Everest Seamount to display cleaning behavior trying to get rid of the small remora fish with the aid of the black jacks.
Time and time again it returned to glide over the top of the seamount providing our lucky guests with about 20 minutes of interaction! Imagine 20 minutes of diving with the whale shark without swimming like a mad fish and without worrying about deco or fast ascent!...only with the DeeepSee!!!
Hammerheads, Mobula Rays, Crabs, Jellyfish, Squid, Schools of Fish everywhere and a whaleshark! This was a week to remember!!!
