There is a psi that the compressor runs smoothest at. It is the point that the force on all stages are such that the compressor is balanced and runs like a sewing machine, no vibration so to speek. That is probably where you want to set the BPR to. I have a bpr on the output of the water separator form the last stage. That is to max the mechanical water removal. What exceeds the bpr setting goes to the filter stack. There the back pressure on the filter output controls dwell time in the filter media. I have been letting the filter psi go up to 3200 or so and then opening the valve a little to xfer the gas from the filter to the tank not letting the filter go below 2500.
