Your first paragraph brought back memories. I was a sonar operator in the U.S. Navy. I know all those sounds. But there was one sound which stands out among them all. We were about halfway between Hawaii and San Diego. It was midnight. Suddenly, over our "underwater telephone," we heard this ghostly wail. What was that??? We never figured it out, because it did not repeat. It is one of those "mysteries of the deep."
