For those who are planning to dive in Brazil I recomend the following site about wrecks:
http://www.naufragiosdobrasil.com.br/

With regards to equipment I strongly recomend that you bring yours since the operators have a huge lack of resources and this can be an issue. Or at least before closing a deal with the operator make sure you get new equipment and double check before leaving.

Fernando de Noronha is the best sea dive in Brazil. With warm waters, 60m battleship wreck, 30-40m visibility during most of the year.

For those who wish to go to Fernando de Noronha some tips:
1) Get a flight that goes through Recife - Pernambuco. This is the best path and normally also the best airlines. Avoid going through Natal - Rio Grande do Norte.

2) Take your gear. This is a rule for Brazilian operators since their equipment is mostly used more than it should. There are exceptions to this rule but I have had several bad surprises.

3) Make sure you have the dive schedule planning BEFORE buying the package. They must clearly state which sites and how many dives will be made. Several packages use different operators, because of that it is common to go to the same place more than twice.

4) Experienced Advanced Open Water divers must go the Corveta Ipiranga V17 wreck. It is a deep dive 42 and 63 meters. This wreck requires AOWD, Nitrox and decompression is done with EANx or O2.

More information about this wreck: http://www.atlantisnoronha.com.br/naufragio.html

5) Dont forget to make some night dives in Recife they are really cool.

hi there.

i´m new to scuba diving and am currently travelling round south america. i would like to do an open water padi course
in brazil, preferably somewhere south of rio. Does anyone have any advice on good dive operators in that reason. any help would be really appreciated.

cheers

Hi, I live in Brazil, and we have some very good operators here. As already have been told here, Fernando de Noronha and Abrolhos are the best points, but Ilha Grande is also great. Good visibility, warm water and great variety of marine life. If you can go to Rio, try the Diver´s Quest operator (www.diversquest.com.br). They are the best in Rio.

I´ll find a good one in Angra dos Reis and Angra, and let you know.

Regards

Fábio Mansur

In Angra dos Reis I think the best is AQUAMAR (http://www.aquamar.com.br/) they operate on the whole area including Ilha Grande.

But if you want to have a nice week or weekend in Ilha Grande I strongly recommend ECO DIVERS in Ilha Grande (http://www.ecodiveresort.com/). They place is really cool, accomodations are excellent and the manager, he is a dutch called Rene, is a certified PADI Instructor who knows all of the diving points.

Hi,

I'm traveling to Porto de Galinhas (near Recife) in February. Can anyone tell me about diving in that area?

Are there good sites around?
Best dive operators?
Approximately how much do the dives cost?
etc..

TIA,

Vilho

Porto de Galinhas is a fantastic place for snorkelling but I wouldn't waste time diving there with Recife so close (less than 1 hr). Even if you have to drive up each day.
I normally dive with Joel Calado of ProjetoMar:

A 2 tank outing will cost you about US$35-40.

I will be in Buzios in January. Can you recommend any dive operators and/or lodging?

elfueda:
Besides "Carnaval" :jester: Brazil has one of the best underated and udiscovered diving in the world. The best places to dive are "Abrolhos" and Fernando de Noronha. The latter being more of more difficult access since it is a reserved national retreat for about 300 dolphins. That is all in the Northeast region. In the Southeast - Rio de Janeiro, There is Ilha Grande which is means "Big Island". Basically that is exactly what it is - A big Island with lots of places to dive and snorkel. There is also Buzios, another great place to go. Last time I went I got so "awed" snorkeling that I forgot to dive. If you are ever going to Brazil don't forget to visit those places and ALWAYS bring your mask and snorkel even if you don't plan on diving.

I know this is an old post, but it is better late than never. Besides I will be personally visiting Rio this September.=-)

See True Blue on this page:

We normally stay at this pousada:
http://www.buziosonline.com.br/lepalmier/portugues/acomoda.cfm

It's a bit of a walk to the centre but it's very comfortable.

Here's a fuller list:

and the other operators:
