The first official trailer for the upcoming movie "Diving Into The Unknown" has been released today. As stated by film transit international:

"Cave diving is a dangerous hobby. For a group of Finnish cave divers, their worst nightmare becomes real during an accident where two divers drown deep inside a cave in Norway. In this feature length documentary the viewers are taken into a secret operation where the surviving divers try to retrieve the bodies of their friends, after the official retrieval operation has been called off. Can they overcome the burden of their own fears during this life-threatening mission?

“Diving into the Unknown” is more than just a rare insight into a secret operation; It is also an in depth story of the groups’ unconditional friendship. This is a unique group of specialists who have to rely on each other every split second of the dive. They have been exploring caves, where no one else has entered ever before, for years but the biggest challenge is ahead of them. Each time the team members enter a cave system anywhere survival is the theme they face. However, the physical burden is nothing compared the psychological one; how would it feel to face your friends’ dead body while you are supposed to complete an extremely dangerous mission in an extremely hostile environment? The team has promised the victims families to bring their loved ones back home even if it means endangering the teams’ own lives.

With multiple cameras, both on the surface and under water, the film follows this breath-taking mission. It shows the twists and turns the team members experience, which all can jeopardize the whole operation at any time."

All of the diving material is genuine and filmed during the first trip that had two casualties and during the recovery operation. The film will premier in February.

There were two sessions of this movie / documentary this week at DocPoint (Helsinki documentary film festival Front page ).

By the way, this is their FB page Takaisin pintaan / Diving into the Unknown

This is the critic available at the DocPoint website:

Finally, any documentary that can make a jaded film critic cringe at her own riveted response deserves to be written about. And Diving into the Unknown is that uncomfortable doc. The film follows four Finnish deep-sea cave explorers, both above water (in straightforward talking head interviews) and to its dangerous depths below as they undertake a heart-pounding mission: to retrieve the bodies of two friends who’d died during a dive to an underwater cave in Norway before production began (though footage from that fatal day survived and was subsequently used in the film).

With its emotional pull, unauthorized “secret mission” (the original retrieval process was called off by the Norwegian and British authorities after being deemed too risky) and eye-catching underwater footage, Diving into the Unknown plays like the quintessential, Hollywood suspense drama. And yet, as the filmmakers and divers join forces to document the entire delicate operation, the film’s greatest (dubious) thrill lies in the potential of the story ultimately turning into a decaying-corpse horror and/or deep-sea snuff flick. And therein lies the queasy rub. Then again, with the rise of extreme sports and GoPro cameras, Diving into the Unknown may just be part of a new “extreme cinema vérité” wave to come.

I was present at the world premiere this week and I have to agree with the review. This movie is a unique view into technical diving and the immense riski these divers went through to retrieve the deceased divers. English subtitles as far as I saw were on point and I would definately recommend this movie to those who have the ability to see this.

Saw that its premier in Finland will be on 2/16. Hopefully it will be available online for the rest of us soon after.

Do we have any news on this? I can't find any info in English...

Well, I asked them, the movie is there with english subtitles, but they're working on international distribution...

In the same position as you Patoux01, seems they're working on airing it in theaters in Finland before putting out the international version.

If you're on FB, the movie's FB page is posting teasers all the time.

I've "liked" the page to get updates when/if the movie is released outside Finland, but those teasers - mostly in Finnish - is cluttering up my FB feed. A little annoying.

You can chose what shows up in your newsfeed =)

I'm a bit disappointed they're not going for VOD. I highly doubt any place here around is gonna show this movie... Would have been more than happy to pay those 5-10€ to watch it at home, and piracy probably isn't the biggest concern in the scuba industry. (eg look at how hard it is to find the PADI courses materials... Might have changed, but I remember having struggled quite a bit)

International premieres announced! You can find them on their Facebook page. Atleast Canada and New Zealand are on the list outside Europe.
