Do you dive alone??

I just met an old friend whom I haven't seen for a couple of years, when told of my soon to be in possesion of C card
he started telling about all theses dives he has done WITHOUT a dive buddy. I was taken back. I was under the stern impression that a dive buddy was necessary for any diving. How should I take this??? As much as I have dived with my instructor, is diving alone some sort of secret society??
