I have no qualms about doint it in fresh water, but I always assuma that salt water will sting like a mofo. Is this an unfounded fear?

It stings a little.
Not as bad as you think. And you get used to it.
Feel better now? :)

Ocean water doesn't hurt at all in my opinion. Main reason for this is because salt water and tears are pretty much the same thing. That also makes it safe to open your eyes in the ocean if you wear contacts. It's a lot like the saline solution that you soak contacts in so it doesn't bother your eyes as much as chlorine and unlike chlorine, it won't just wash your contact out. At least, I've never had a problem with that. Well....except for that time the wave crashed into my open eyes, I lost a contact that day. :)

If I have to do it, I will, but I squint. When your contacts are about $200 a lens, I don't want to run the slightest risk of one of them coming out! Its also not the cleanest stuff you can put expose your eyes to, but it certainly can be done.

I open my eyes in the ocean...doesn't seem to bother me at all, even with contacts. Anyway, have to see where your'e going:D

I found on my vacation to barbados that my eyes stung more there than when I dive in NC>

I just opened one eye instead of two and it wasnt as bad.

A good reason ...admist others...to carry a frameless spare mask in your pocket
