Scuba diver dies in Dry Tortugas National Park

KEY WEST, Fla. —
A Louisiana man died Sunday while diving in the body of water at the Dry Tortugas National Park Saturday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported through a blog.

Paul Wimberly, 67, of Natchitoches, Louisiana, was in the Dry Tortugas snorkeling from a boat when for unknown reasons, he began to panic, grabbed his dive partner and pulled her to the bottom with him, the Florida Keys Sheriff blog said.

Wimberly’s dive partner told authorities that it appeared Wimberly panicked while underwater. She was able to shed her dive equipment and perform an emergency ascension to the surface. Once on the surface, the woman found help and she was taken on board the boat, the blog said.

A rescue diver retrieved Wimberly from the water. A physician and a physician’s assistant performed CPR on Wimberly, but were unable to revive him, the blog reads.

Wimberly was snorkeling from the commercial vessel, Playmate. It was operated by Sea-Clusive Charters.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of Wimberly's death.

Sorry to hear he died. Condolences to his family & friends.

Snorkeling could be a typo.

The one that is confusing me is if she was able to "shed" her dive gear off, why not put air into her BCD instead to bring both to the surface, when her dive buddy panic & took her under? That would be more safe thing to do.

Yes, confusing. Saw a post on another board where they were looking for a couple more "experienced nitrox spearfishing divers" for this particular trip. Curious as to what would cause an experienced diver to panic at 60'.
