I have the DX5000G with the "Island Package" setup, and could possibly be interested in upgrading to the 8, but I just want to buy the camera and not the housing. All ads I've seen show them as a package only, no the camera sold seperately.

The DX-8000G camera has been discontinued for about a year and has been replaced with the DX-1G that is 10MP. The DX-1G is not the same design as the 5/8000 camera, so unfortunately it does not fit the same housing.
Your best bet would be posting a WTB on the sales forums or searching ebay or some authorized dealers websites.

I've come across people selling just the camera on ebay. You might consider getting the ricoh gx8 if you can't find the re-branded s&s though.

The Ricoh GX-8 is the same camera that the DX-8000G uses and that would be your best bet. However, sometimes this site sells repaired 8000G cameras Service Prices : Sub Aquatic Camera, Service, Sales and Repair of Underwater Camera Equipment. They repaired my 8000G camera and then I sold it to get the DX-1G.
