I've heard so many good things about diving in Catalina Island that I thought it was time to take a mini vacation this July and go diving for a few days.

I do however have a couple of questions before I start making arrangements.

1. Is July a good month to dive Catalina Island?

2. What live-aboard dive boat would you recommend in using?

The more details you can give me the better.

Thanks,
Triton

Triton,

Always good diving in So Cal off Catalina. Water temp in July will probably be in mid 60's.

There are several options you have, there are dive boats out of San Pedro and Long Beach areas that offer single as well as multi day trips. If you look at this website you may get some better insight into what is available: http://www.californiadiveboats.com

There are also some nice dive packages if you stay on Catalina also. to check them out go to http://www.catalina.com and see what they offer. Summertime the rates are higher for obvious reasons.

If you stay on Catalina you can do a shore dive from a place called Casino Point which is right in Avalon. Very nice, easy dive with plenty of marine life and some small wrecks nearby in less than 100'.

Be safe, but stay wet

Hey, Triton,

I picked the "blue" icon because the Catalina water is cold! For me, anyhow!

Give Catalina Divers Supply a call: 1-800-353-0330. I do not know if they have a web site. If you are interested in seeing sharks, they can take you to some neat places! Andy Wadley is a fine DM.

Have fun--Catalina is a fun place!

Hi Triton, In the first week of May I was out with the Sand Dollar (don't hold me responsible for the cheesey midi tunes on their site :) & Scuba Schools of America. I had a great time! The boat was not fancy or luxurious, but it was comfortable and the food never stopped. The viz there was 70+. We did one night dive where there was enough amient light from the nearly full moon to turn off our lights at 30'.
