I posted a thread "Wet gear and overweight charges" in May. Here is the result and also United's letter if anyone wants it for reference.

We arrived at LAX, letter in hand, and of course the ticket agent knew NOTHING. Showed her the letter and she sent us to the "odd sized bag" counter. They knew NOTHING about the weight limit, but after reading the letter attached a "HEAVY" tag and off we went. Returning from Cozumel was a breeze. Our gear only bag weighed 63 pounds with both our gear and 4 wetsuits (we were there for a month)
