Going to stay at Wyndham via a package with Stuart Cove Nov 7-12. Would like some recommendations for food establishments. Don't need upscale just "safe" (I've had the intestinal thing one tooo many times on the islands) and close by so we spend less money on food and cabs and more on DIVING!!!! I don't care if we eat pizza every night.

Thanks, THE COUNT DOWN BEGINS!!

hi JillGadget,

We've stayed at the Wyndham (in Cable Beach, outside of Nassau; 30 mins. from Stuart Cove's shop) a few times. We are not adventurous eaters, don't like/ can't tolerate spicy food, and have some seafood allergies. (In other words, we are boring vacation eaters.) :)

Given what you've described here are 3 suggestions, in the order that we enjoyed them. (All 3 are inside the Wyndham-so thats' $0.00 for cabs!!)

1) "the Deli"-has a small but varied selection of cooked food, in addition to burgers, hot/cold sandwiches, and pizza, etc. It is located just off the casino floor. it is set up cafeteria-style, with a serving line, but there are waiters who, at least at dinner, will lead you to a table, and bring you your order once it is ready.'
It is very low key, plastic plates, utensils-possibly too informal for some, but we liked it.

2) I don't recall the name, but it is located in the main tower, at the foot of the escalators-it has icecream, sandwiches, wraps, and some hot food.

3) the buffet-also located off the casino has, as you would guess, a buffet!
It is open for breakfast and dinner. We liked breakfast there more than we liked dinner.
(The "lower mark" for dinner was based on selection of food we would/could eat, rather than quality.) One night, during the week we were there, they moved the dinner buffet out to the beach, and offer a seafood-heavy menu. I don't know if that is a regular thing or not.

In our week there, last August, I think we ate dinner once at the buffet, once at the "icecream place", and five nights at "the deli".

enjoy your trip

JillGadget,

To save on cab rides, you can take the buses that run along the main road into town. They cost $1 and run fairly regularly, but they do stop running early (6 p.m. or so) and are less frequent on weekends.

There is a grocery store (can't remember the name of it) along the main road into Nassau where we bought snacks and food for breakfast because the place we stayed had a little kitchenette. This is another option for dining on the cheap. We also bought beer at the store to keep in our fridge.

Finally, we ordered a pizza from Dominos one night. They do deliver and we were even farther out of town than Wyndham.

Have a great trip!

Pizza ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD even if it is Dominos:no:! I will have to find out if the Wyndham has a refridge and do the grocery store idea. Im already bringing a ton of clif bars for snacks while diving.:crafty:

Thanks again for ideas.

I second the bus. They call them Jitneys, If memory serves it's the number 10 Jitney that runs from the port area down town to the resort stretch you are staying at. We rode them with two familys and you get to meet all kinds of colorful folks. Never had any issues at all, and for $1 I don't think they can be beat. All the locals are helpful with telling you which bus to catch.

Cafe Johnny Canoe is nearby, we ate there a couple times when we were on the island a few years ago. Conch fritters were delicious! More conch than batter yummmy!

Bahamian Kitchen is a little interesting to find but worth the hunt. I would recommend it for lunch on a non-diving day. Take the bus from Wyndham to the cruise ship port and walk from there.

Anthony's Caribbean Bar and Grill is near Atlantis. I don't remember exactly how we got there but I know we took the bus to the cruise ship dock then either walked, grabbed the ferry or another bus. Food was good and I absolutely LOVED their strawberry daquiri mix.

There was another restaraunt near Wyndham (turn right when your back is to the hotel) that was good but I can't remember the name of it.

Just for comparison purposes, a cab from the Wyndham to town is about $13 bucks each way (2 people) this past summer.

Oh, yeah! I second Bahamian Kitchen--we had a great little lunch there. Well, not so little. Bring your appetite! It CAN be tricky to find, but there are some little signs to follow. As I recall, the last one was on the opposite side of the street from the restaurant, which was confusing. If you need, just ask and the locals will point you in the right direction.
