I hear you, Jim. Western Union is a deal-killer for me.
In this instance, I made an exception when the seller provided me all of his info (address, phone number, DL#,) a reasonable rationale for wanting to use WU, and as an instructor and long-time member, clearly had a position/reputation in the community here. I suppose the local pick-up option gave me some confidence, too.
Won't do that again...
