is not really that good of an idea. Most books will give you diagrams on how a reg works and this gives insight into what sort of bits and pieces are in one but evry manufacturer is slightly different.

It would be much better to take a course offered by the manufacturer to qualify in their product line and this will give you access to formal training, parts catalogues, and any special tools and techniques required for the first stage especially. Taking it apart is easy but will you be SURE when you go back in that you put it back together properly.

All GOOD dive shops will have a tech on site who can carry out service and repair or at least be able to send it away for you. Regs should be serviced at least once a year and not the week before your Dive Trip is due to leave.
Also there are parts in the first stage that should be replaced so if you give it to the shop make sure you get a little Baggie of replaced parts when you collect it.

Hope that helps some.

freeflow76, Welcome to the boards! Glad to have you here.

Regarding serviceing your own reg: Three problems that I see. One is that you will void manufacturer's warranties. Two is that you will not be able to obtain the rebuild parts without being a certified service tech. And Three, if you make any mistakes... you die.

If you really want to service your own, you will need to go through the proper courses with the individual manufacturers. Even then unless you do it full time, you can get quite rusty. The shop techs are the only ones that remain in practice and get notified of changes, upgrades and recalls.
