Gosh, those wingnuts are pointy. Ow. Ow.

If you're not using an STA, why not stick with the zipties? There's no load on the wing when the tank is mounted if the camstraps run through the backplate. Zipties of the same size as used on most mouthpieces are fine.

I've got to be honest, haven't heard/seen of a backplate yet where the wingnuts caused a "pointy" problem.

BILLB:
On a dive a couple of weeks ago, I saw an Instructor diver with large plastic nuts with a stainless insert that replaces the wing nuts. The plastic knob is large enough to tighten by hand. I wanted to ask where he found them but forgot to do so. Anybody know or sen this type of BP attachment hardware?

I wonder, myself, about the comment re: hardware "stack". Why would you need several washers? I had a single flat washer under each wingnut and the wingnut ends stayed well down in the channel of the plate. I see no reason for lockwashers and multiple flat washers - which is probably why the wingnuts are raised up far enough to give you the "ow. ow"s!

Great ... I'd order a pair to try out except when I click where it says "Click Here" nothing happens ...

They do have a phone number... :eyebrow:

Phone is best with them. I use wing nuts myself. Never had a problem with them. I don't know how they could dig into you. I have seen these knobs used, and it does look easier when your on a cold boat deck.

Here's a link to my solution to the "pointy" and "easily lost" wing nut.

http://deepseasupply.com/page13.html

See the Q-Tach at the top of the page.

The delrin "keepers" secure to the plate, and the SS nuts snap into the keepers.

This project was motivated by the piles of wing nuts on the bottom in the outline of a dive boat I noticed at a popular anchor site:D

See the Q-Tach at the top of the page.

I'm looking at these things, and I'm not getting it.

I think that I'd have to drill and mount the delrin bits to the BP, and then attach the nut things to my band bolts.

Is this correct.

One can also purchase items known as "jam nuts". Jam nuts are nuts of the same pitch as the standard nut (duh) but are bout 1/2 to 1/3 the thickness of the normal nut. The are designed to be "jammed" up against a standard nut to provide extra security against unwanted loosening of the nut.

The jam nut can be used as a stand alone nut and jammed up against a lock washer. This gives you added security and a lower fastener profile.

Hi Peter,

Our backplates, and others, have pairs of holes / slots top and bottom for mounting doubles.

See http://www.deepseasupply.com/page7.html

These pairs are intended to allow trim adjustments by moving the tanks relative to the plate.

The Q-Tach uses the "unused" holes / slots to mount the plastic retainers. The slot at the bottom is for banded doubles where the bolts may not be exactly at 11" centers. Here too the slot allows the Q-Tach some "float" for alignment.

They should work on any plate with pairs of holes that are 1" apart.
