I hope I'm doing this quote thing right. I'm more a diver than a web guy.

Anyway I have to agree with trtldvr. Over the years the costs of running a dive boat in Key West have greatly increased. What hasn't gone up is the cost of paying someone to work on the boats. It's the only cost that the Dive OPs can control, so the pay hasn't increased since 2000. Leaving Key West with only a handfull of working divers that have been here 5-10 years or more. In case you don't know it's very expensive to live here. So I hope the Dive OPs will increase the pay of their workers along with the increase in what they're charging divers, but I'm not holding my breath. So please continue to tip the crew.

As far as the Dive OPs not increasing the dive trip cost because of the increase in volume. That will be done by one dive shop I'm sure. But it's like I told a guy that found a cheaper trip than I suggested for him: "I thought you DIDN'T want to be on a Cattle Boat"

    Hey Bill,

I totally agree with you there. Down here it is not even worth the cost of getting your OWSI anymore, because with the liability inusrance, testing, etc that comes along with it, you are looking at several thousand dollars. If you figure 2500 for the whole process, it would take 50 trips at the $50 per trip rate that crew is paid for a trip. Some retail shops on the island are charging $125 per person per trip to the Vandenberg, yet the crew is only getting $50 each plus the tips. If you have 15 divers, that is close to $1900 per trip that the particular shop takes in. Yet they have 4 crew on a boat.... Do the math.

We have all seen the shops and independant dive operators dry up. Bone Island Dive Center was sold in 2000, Key West Diving Society closed shop and boat back in 2004. Southpoint Divers went from their shop and 2 boats to a booth and one boat. Seabreeze is gone now from the Galleon. The only real remaining operations that have been around long term are Captains Corner, Subtropic, Lost Reef, and Dive Key West. And there are rumors that one of those might not be around for much longer.

Which leads me into my main point. As dive boat captains and crew, we are very limited on who we can work for and what we can do in the industry. And the dive shop operators KNOW this. So it is either work for what they sadly offer us, or we dont work at all. I remember getting to the Island in 98, and the rate was the same $50 as it is now. And the cost of living was less as well.

Just because a dive shop charges more money for a dive trip does NOT make them a better trip to take. A lot of times, it merely means they have more overhead to maintain, and their prices reflect that. Any of you driving down the Keys will know what I mean when you take a look at the gas prices on the way down. Once you get out of Tavernier at about MM95, the prices go up about $.30 a gallon.

For value and quality of diving, I recommend Captains Corner. For a Vandenberg trip, tanks and weights are $65, where other dive boat operators are running up to $125, and require you to go off the island to get their boat. If you need everything, it is $90. No gear at all is $55. Just because they are less expensive doesnt make them inferior. To me, it makes them more appealing.

You can have a 6 pack that charges you $100 to go out, but the boat feels really full because of the size. Or you can have a boat that charges you $70 to go out, has 15 divers on it, but has a lot of room to move around and place your gear. Decide what you want in a boat and what kind of diving you want to do. That will make finding a boat a lot easier, and you will be happier in the long run........

    Hey ya'll!
I haven't posted in a while because we've been working to get ready for the Big Day! Word on the street is that they're sinking her between 10-noon on the 27th. Not sure when she'll be dive ready- i've heard some people say 24 hours, some say 48 hours. Anywho, we've replaced the Island Diver so we'll be running two boats again! ::banana::
We're keeping our trip schedule the same; morning check-in at 8am, afternoon check-in at 1pm. For night dives, we'll have check-in around 6:30 or 7, since the days are getting longer. Starting June 1st, we're charging $80 for a trip, $100 for trip with tanks and weights, and $120 for a trip with full gear (two tank dive trips, of course). So, yes, a slight price increase, but I think the point has been made about the expenses of running a dive shop in Key West, so I'll not restate what everyone else has been saying. (Oh and we offer a 20% military discount :D )
We did the tour of the Vandenberg last week, and wooooweee! I can't wait to see her underwater! This thing is massive!!! And for you tec guys, lots of exploring to be done.
Speaking of tec- we'll be mixing trimix for those who need fills!
And, we have a drive-up fill station
Looking forward to seeing ya'll soon!! :D

I will keep the rumor mill silent at this point to prevent more scuttlebutt Jesse. Ill stop in when I get back onto the Rock tomorrow and let you know.

I also have a townhouse for the next week I am trying to find some people to share if you have any divers coming in that need a place. It is on base since I am military, and comes out to 50 a night per person for a 3BR fully furnished pad that is a minute from your shop........

I had people that were coming that flaked out, so I am trying to keep from losing my a** on it. Any help would be appreciated.

After what has seemed like months of 20+ knot winds and 6+ft seas we are finally getting great boating weather, just when we need it the most. Tuesday and Wednesday we are to have 5 to 10 kt winds out of the SE and seas outside the reef of 2-3 ft. Gorgeous!!!!

    Safe dives

So good to be in the Keys..... Less than 48 hours to go. Still could use 2 more people for the townhouse this week if anyone wants to come down $50 a person per night based on 4 people
