Experience. I've seen way to many people rush to become an instructor without really taking the time to learn each step of the way. The best DM's are the ones that have taken the time to be good at each level. Spend time with the students and customers, get to know them as people. Learn to shut up and listen. I've seen to many DM's and instructors walking around trying to be important. It's not about YOU.

First, try to know as much as possible about the (your) business and be open to always learn more. Second, love what you do, if you rather be doing something else or being someplace else it will show. Third, attitude, be people friendly, down-to-earth and helpful, dont be a cocky know-it-better than you smartass, remember that you once were where your student is now. Fourth, dive, dive, dive! There aint no better way for you to get the experience on how to do all of the above as related to scuba diving.
