Maybe I got bad information, but wasn't the origin of this idea Bill main's because he wanted a blunt-tipped knife and they didn't make them then?
A line cutter and shears are my go-to tools.

The story that I got was, here in the Northeast US, losing an expensive knife into a broken down wreck was a common experience "back in the day". A flat end is much better for removing rust than a point.
