Why is it that if I go to the "Mid-west" i will end up someplace like Kansas or so? but if I go to the "Mid-east" I'll end up some place like Egypt or so? I mean shouldn't Ohio and the surroundings be "The Mid-east"?

Well its all about perspective... you can go to east (or middle east) la, east usa, east earth. For some reason the terms mid-west, middle east and a few others are more or less global terms... I theory it should be "middle east earth" but I think people are too lazy to say that :)

just like I fly West to get to the far East

No need to worry about that silly direction, east. You can get anywhere you want to if you just remember the famous words "go west young man."

Maybe I'm partial to the west though, living in Oregon.

Later, Hawk.

You folks probably knew that if you are going up to Maine, they say you are going "down East"...

And how can South Dakota and South Carolina be in North America?

Oh, well, as Bob Hope once said,

East is East and West is West and Never the Twain Shall Meet...

(And, yes, I know who Rudyard Kipling was.)

Joewr...saying, a compass rose by another name....

Actually, if you end up in Kansas you have gone nowhere.
