I have been to Malta a couple of times. And I know that you can hire a car and tanks and go diving independend, so without guide or divecenter. Now a person asked me if I had done this alone. He has a friend in Malta, and the idea is to visit that friend (not a diver) and dive for some days independend then. I said no experience with independend diving in malta at all, but why shouldn't it be possible? I know you can to go most divecenters alone, but then you are limited to the divesites they offer. His whish is to do some days of diving, but not with a divecenter. Does anyone has experience with independend diving? So hire a car and hire tanks and get (trimix)fills? And to what divecenter have you been?
