In my 50+ years of diving, I've seen drastic declines in populations of many shark species, abalone, and bony fish in Socal waters. Fortunately there have been a few success stories once conservation measures have been implemented (although often much later than they should have been). We are seeing increases in sharks such as soupfins, abalone (the only direction they could go here was up or toward extinction) and giant sea bass. There can be hope for recovery IF we act.

The recent designation of a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in California waters is a step in the right direction although the set-aside was less than 20% and much lower than scientists felt was necessary. We need a lot more steps like that, and bigger ones, to ensure our children and grandchildren have access to healthy oceans.
