I am curious about becoming a member of Project AWARE and doing data collection for coral reef monitoring in Hawaii. If a person volunteers their time doing this are they able to deduct their diving expenses off of their income taxes at the end of the year?

Any input on this would be much appreciated......

This would really be a better question for a professional tax advisor. I'm sure you would need to carefully account your time, milage, and expenses and the tax rates are different for charity work vs professional work.

You would need to consult with a local tax professional to determine whether this would be possible for you.

Certainly SOME of your expenses would be deductable as a charitable deduction. But probably not as much as you'd hope. And you'll certainly need to see a tax adviser on this.

Actually you need to have this answered by Project AWARE.

They are the entity that you are volunteering for.
