So I was recently gifted a MARES 12 DFC 1st stage in what appears to be very good shape. I will of course get it looked at and serviced if needed before use but being new to the sport and the overwhelming equipment options Im just not sure about it. I guess my real question is, is this a good start to an entry level rig set up? Also, does the 2nd stag and Octo have to be matching brand? Lastly, what exactly is DFC? It has a specific DFC port. Thanks for any info.

no they don't have to match, but it makes finding a shop for service easier in some cases as the shop would have to carry parts for the different brands. the mares should work fine for recreational diving, it just isn't popular on this board as it is an entry level reg you see in rental fleets.

dfc is dynamic flow control. another marketing gimmick.
