You might try calling the dive shops in Austin to get other/multiple opinions, but I think there are better dive options than Lady Bird/Town Lake. Personally, I would consider taking the Dive Authorization Course at Spring Lake in San Marcos which will enable you to do volunteer diving there, helping to clear invasive vegetation and keep the springs in good shape. It is without doubt, the best inland diving in the state, and it is rewarding to help keep this Texas treasure as pristine as possible.
 
Lady bird/town lake is the lake downstream, which is a no swimming lake. I’m referring to the lake between town lake and lake Travis and yes spring lake is amazing but I’m focusing on finding items thrown from wake board boats.
